L’exposition Öndia’tahterendih, oubliées ou disparues : Akonessen, Zitya, Marie et les autres, créée par la Boite Rouge Vif, une OBNL autochtone du Québec, et la commissaire wendate Sylvie Paré, présente 10 artistes rendant hommage aux femmes et aux filles autochtones touchées par le féminicide autochtone, tout en cherchant à mobiliser le public. Je souhaite dans le cadre de cet article explorer les stratégies mises en place au sein de l’exposition, telle qu’elle a été présentée au musée de la Civilisation du Québec en 2018. Je conclurai en explorant l’inscription de l’exposition dans le développement d’un commissariat engagé autochtone au Canada.

When, in 2015, students at the University of Cape Town in South Africa demanded the removal of a statue of British colonial and diamond merchant Cecil Rhodes from their campus, they initiated what was to become a global call to ‘decolonize the university’. In the same year, students at University College London began to ask the question: why is my curriculum white? Other public sector cultural institutions soon joined the chorus in an overdue acknowledgement that unspoken colonial legacies had for too long upheld and promulgated white privilege. The role of public sculpture as a catalyst for political debate and change has a long tradition within art's histories. It serves to remind us of the centrality of the discipline in promoting and maintaining dominant cultural values; and yet it also enables us to interrogate them as historically located and subject to inevitable temporal mutation. Whilst postcolonial studies and critical race studies have been informing and challenging the shape of art history for several decades, new generations of students, scholars, critics, curators, collectors, artists and audiences are seeking radical re-evaluations of the academy and those cultural institutions who hold themselves up as standard-bearers of our collective cultural heritage. But, what, if anything, is specific about the current moment's demands to reassess how universities, museums, and galleries teach, research, collect and exhibit? How can art historians, curators, collectors, museum directors, artists and writers respond to the call to decolonize art history? How can we draw from the rich legacy of postcolonial, feminist, queer and Marxist perspectives within art history, and what are the new theoretical perspectives that are needed?

This article examines how “colonial time” is called into question in two short films of the National Film Board of Canada’s series Souvenir, from 2015. The question of time lies at the heart of this series, for which the NFB commissioned contemporary Indigenous filmmakers to take up their archives of visual material on Indigenous peoples. The colonial temporal framework is at work in the vast archives of ethnographic and documentary film and photography on Indigenous peoples dating back to the early twentieth century, in which Indigenous people are often represented as part of “vanishing” cultures. Thus, in this article, I underscore the temporal interruptions that occur when ethnographic visual material of Indigenous peoples is put into the hands of contemporary Indigenous artists. I focus first on what it means to repurpose dehumanizing colonial archives and ask whether visual sovereignty is in fact possible within the archives. By analyzing the reappropriation of archival footage in the short films Mobilize by Caroline Monnet and Etlinisigu’niet (Bleed Down) by Jeff Barnaby, I elucidate how the filmmakers break with modes of colonial time through what I propose to call “reframings” that offer alternative ways of conceiving of time. By rehabilitating ethnographic images, these filmmakers refuse to project the material into the distant past and complicate the readability of Indigenous images in the archives, revealing how the reappropriation of old images can be just as powerful as the production of new ones.

Transnational Korean Television: Cultural Storytelling and Digital Audience provides previously absent analyses of Korean TV dramas' transnational influences, peculiar production features, distribution, and consumption to enrich the contextual understanding of Korean TV's transcultural mobility. Even as academic discussions about the Korean Wave have heated up, Korean television studies from transnational viewpoints often lack in-depth analysis and overlook the recently extended flow of Korean television beyond Asia. This book illustrates the ecology of Korean television along with the Korean Wave for the past two decades in order to showcase Korean TV dramas' international mobility and its constant expansion with the different Western television and their audiences. Korean TV dramas' mobility in crossing borders has been seen in both transnational and transcultural flows, and the book opens up the potential to observe the constant flow of Korean television content in new places, peoples, manners, and platforms around the world. Scholars of media studies, communication, cultural studies, and Asian studies will find this book especially useful.

Video games, which uniquely interweave design, code, art, and sound, can be an especially robust way to express Indigenous cultures. Such games should involve Indigenous people in meaningful roles throughout design and development from conceptualization to distribution with a focus on building capacity to encourage self-determination for Indigenous game developers. This call to action informs SPEAR (Sovereignty, Positionality, Equity, Advocacy, and Reciprocity), a framework for design and development informed by the Indigenous cultural game Thunderbird Strike.

Entre mémoires et créations autochtones est une collection d'essais réunissant les voix de 16 artistes, commissaires, historien·ne·s de l'art et travailleur·se·s culturel·le·s autochtones, tant francophones qu'anglophones, œuvrant dans les territoires que l'on nomme Québec. Faisant suite à des expositions, des performances, des résidences d'artistes et des discussions mises en place lors du Projet Tiohtià:ke (2017-2019) du Collectif des commissaires autochtones, ces textes honorent les relations et les affinités qui sont au cœur de ces pratiques en arts visuels. Profiles and problematizes digital games that depict Atlantic slavery and "gamify" slave resistance. In videogames emphasizing plantation labor, the player may choose to commit small acts of resistance like tool-breaking or working slowly. Others dramatically stage the slave's choice to flee enslavement and journey northward, and some depict outright violent revolt against the master and his apparatus. This work questions whether the reduction of a historical enslaved person to a digital commodity in games such as Mission US, Assassin's Creed, and Freedom Cry ought to trouble us as a further commodification of slavery's victims, or whether these interactive experiences offer an empowering commemoration of the history of slave resistance.

La question de la mémoire en condition hyperconnectée s’articule également dans le potentiel des réseaux sociaux pour la mise en visibilité de différents mouvements activistes autochtones au Canada. À travers deux études de cas, le projet The Indigenous Archival Photo Project par l’écrivain Paul Seesequasis (Cri des plaines) et la page Instagram What Brings Us Here mettant en vedette les groupes d’activistes à Winnipeg The Bear Clan et Drag the Red, ce chapitre réfléchit à la manière dont les créateur.rice.s autochtones utilisent les réseaux sociaux comme des vecteurs d’agentivité narrative témoignant de différents enjeux touchant les communautés. Ces projets doivent être considérés comme des opérateurs de changements, car ils participent à la valorisation des voix autochtones et à l’instauration de divers réseaux de solidarité. Par différentes stratégies conversationnelles en ligne, ces projets renouent ainsi avec le communautarisme propre aux médiums de communication traditionnels autochtones où le dialogue est primordial.

This paper analyzes the growth of gender studies in Latin America, despite facing resistance in the scientific field and from the advance of conservative policies on the continent. It also addresses the challenges that feminist research faces in colonized spaces. To develop our argument, we draw on the scholarship of feminist researchers in Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina, such as Veleda da Silva and Lan (2007), Silva and Vieira (2014), Silva, César and Pinto (2015), Colombara (2016), Lan (2016), Veleda da Silva (2016), Ibarra-García and Escamilla-Herrera (2016), Zaragocin-Carvajal, Moreano-Venegas, and Álvarez-Velasco (2018), and Silva and Ornat (2019). This paper also examines the difficulties that Latin American feminist geographies face in establishing their own foundations in a globalized world where the geopolitics of global knowledge of geography is increasingly structured by the epistemological centralization of the Anglophone northern hemisphere.

As a case study, this article examines the development of China’s online game industry and how China responds to the forces of globalization. Based on in-depth interviews, ethnographic research, and the analysis of archive documents from the past few years, this study identifies China’s evolving strategy of neo-techno-nationalism. In the Chinese context, this national strategy manipulates technology to create a version of popular nationalism that is both acceptable to and easily censored by the authorities. Therefore, cultural industries that adopt this strategy stand a good chance of prevailing in the Chinese market. This success explains why the regional competitors of Chinese online games—Korean games—are more successful in China than most of their Western counterparts. By providing a snapshot of the current ecology of China’s online game industry, this article also discusses the influence of regional and global forces in a concrete context and argues that the development of China’s online game industry depends more on political factors than economic factors.

Computer Science education research establishes collaboration among students as a key component in learning, particularly its role in pair programming. Furthermore, research shows that girls, an underrepresented population in computing, benefit from collaborative learning environments, contributing to their persistence in CS. However, too few studies examine the role and benefits of collaborative learning, especially collaborative talk, among African-American girls in the context of complex tasks like designing video games for social change. In this exploratory study, we engage 4 dyads of African-American middle school girls in the task of designing a video game for social change, recording the dyads' conversations with their respective partners over an eight-week summer game design experience during the second year of what has now become a six-year study. Qualitative analysis of dyadic collaborative discussion reveals how collaborative talk evolves over time in African-American middle-school girls.

Cet article se penche sur les relations et collaborations récentes entre les cinéastes autochtones et québécois. Une brève exploration des représentations autochtones antérieures et du contexte contemporain de co-réalisation Québec/Autochtonie nous permet d’esquisser un portrait plus nuancé des nouvelles configurations transnationales du paysage cinématographique québécois. De même, les notions d’autochtonisation du médium, de souveraineté visuelle et de survivance nous aideront à mieux cerner les œuvres de fiction réalisées par des cinéastes autochtones, qui contribuent à l’enrichissement d’un cinéma qui propose de nouvelles façons d’habiter les territoires québécois/autochtones.

What could a history of game studies be from the perspective of a queer Chickasaw feminist scholar? Should this be a disciplining manifesto, a polemical call to arms for radical transformation, a survey of the existing scholarship that has thus far framed games ludologically as fun, as sportsmanship, as design, or as epic struggles for political power where the player rather ominously wins or dies? I’m a bit of an interloper as a recent arrival from Indigenous studies to video-game studies, a field that represents both the end of history and the ahistoricity of pop-culturally–oriented archives that are presentist at best, and at worst, complicit with an industry derived from settler militaristic technologies and platforms and compelled by niche markets to innovate faster and faster to saturate more and more households at the structural level of occupation. And then there is the problem of what the history of game studies has been: Greco-Roman, European, cis white male, heterosexual, orientalist, algorithmic, and code driven with the techno-optimism of Silicon Valley alongside Jane McGonigal’s fundamental belief that games have and will save the world once they unite the collective brain power of all the gamers and bend them to a single task—and if not all that, then peak 1980s geekery with a hint of liberal multiculturalism thrown in, if Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One is anything to go by. It is as if the history of game studies has only ever been an imperial read-only memory to be mined, played, and spatialized within the conscriptions of conquistador archives already known and yet to be discovered.
