Inspired by recent calls for a transformation of management scholarship, we conduct a scoping review of empirical studies during 1998–2015 on the phenomenon of social innovation within organizations. Social innovations are novel solutions that address social problems and create value for society as a whole. We make several problem-based observations and suggest how the social innovation phenomenon can be empirically grounded and contextualized to make future research intellectually relevant and meaningful for practice. We propose that the way forward lies in using abduction as a logic of discovery, adopting complexity theorizing, and using set-theoretic analytical methods to reflect multiple realities. The application of these three methods will help link theory and research methods with practice, thereby improving the ability of research to tackle managerial and societal issues and hence strengthening management scholarship.

Notion sujette à controverses, l’innovation sociale est appropriée au Québec par divers acteurs ayant le changement social à cœur et finit par constituer son propre écosystème. Il se compose, entre autres, des praticiens qui professionnalisent une démarche d’accompagnement à l’innovation sociale : les consultants. Stimulés par la mise en place de modèles sociétaux alternatifs visant une transformation sociale durable, les processus qu’ils élaborent s’écartent des modèles traditionnels de la consultation en management. Considérant cela, ce projet de recherche aborde la question suivante : en quoi consiste la consultation en innovation sociale? Outre la compréhension des principales approches et questions soulevées dans la littérature par les concepts d’innovation sociale et de consultation, ce mémoire explore les tensions et paradoxes inhérents au champ de l’innovation sociale. Il se consacre plus précisément à une étude comparative des pratiques de consultation mises en œuvre par des praticiens de différentes organisations œuvrant dans le milieu, et le rôle qu’ils jouent dans le changement social.

This study examines the influence of digitalisation and social entrepreneurship on national well-being. Taking a configurational approach, the results show that digitalisation can benefit national well-being if the country has an adequate educational system, good governance, and a philanthropy-oriented financial system. Digitalisation can leverage these conditions in promoting national well-being. The study also contributes to entrepreneurship literature as it clarifies the role of social entrepreneurship. Social entrepreneurship impacts national well-being when institutions are weak, but it is indifferent in developed economies, which gives support to the institutional void perspective. This finding contributes to the ongoing debate on the role of the institutions on the creation of social enterprises and advances knowledge on the social impact of social entrepreneurship. Additionally, the results show that a combination of conditions is required to achieve high levels of national well-being.

The Social Innovation Fund (SIF) - funded by Scottish Government and the European Social Fund - adopts a ‘public venture capital’ model to support socially innovative organisations. This article critically explores the use of public venture capital programmes to fund and grow the social economy through the case study of Heavy Sound Community Interest Company. We conclude that, while SIF funding helped Heavy Sound to scale-up an effective intervention in the short term, further significant scaling might undermine the project’s success and long-term sustainability was not assured. We call for further research into the long-term consequences of public venture capital programmes coming to an end, including coordinated evaluation of the SIF.

Waste generation, especially hazardous waste, can strongly affect the environment and human lives. There is an urgent need to implement sustainable hazardous waste management tools to reduce their harmful impact on the environment stemming from incorrect waste management. However, there is still a lack of business model concepts combining sustainable development and risk management in reverse logistic value chains for hazardous waste. Therefore, the authors develop a novel sustainable business model canvas for both an entity and the logistics system using the Osterwalder's Business Model Canvas integrated with the concept of sustainable development in economic, social and environmental areas (Triple Bottom Line, TBL) and risk-related elements. Then, using the developed sustainable business model canvas, the model for the logistics system for the treatment of hazardous waste containing asbestos was successfully created. The model was implemented in the prototype of computer software in the form of electronic network services.

Partant d’une description des spécificités des bouleversements introduits par la transition numérique et des technologies capacitantes qu’elle promeut, nous montrons comment les opérateurs sont parfois en demande de plus d’innovations numériques pour améliorer leurs conditions de travail et les services rendus au public, pour autant que celles-ci ne soient pas substitutives et excessivement rationalisantes.
