In the age of the Grand Tour, foreigners flocked to Italy to gawk at its ruins and paintings, enjoy its salons and cafés, attend the opera, and revel in their own discovery of its past. But they also marveled at the people they saw, both male and female. In an era in which castrati were "rock stars," men served women as cicisbei, and dandified Englishmen became macaroni, Italy was perceived to be a place where men became women. The great publicity surrounding female poets, journalists, artists, anatomists, and scientists, and the visible roles for such women in salons, academies, and universities in many Italian cities also made visitors wonder whether women had become men. Such images, of course, were stereotypes, but they were nonetheless grounded in a reality that was unique to the Italian peninsula. This volume illuminates the social and cultural landscape of eighteenth-century Italy by exploring how questions of gender in music, art, literature, science, and medicine shaped perceptions of Italy in the age of the Grand Tour.

Gouvernance montréalaise, deux mots qui ont fait la manchette depuis quelques années. Afin de dépasser le discours médiatique, des chercheurs se sont penchés sur l’évolution de la gouvernance de la ville de Montréal et de son agglomération. Résultats d’une journée d’étude tenue en avril 2012, les textes dans ce volume présentent les enjeux et les objets de gouver-nance à différentes époques et sous différentes structures administratives. Cet exercice ne vise pas à définir les racines d’une gouvernance dysfonctionnelle, mais à bien comprendre les cadres à l’intérieur desquels les autorités ont dû manœuvrer. En mettant de l’avant les objets, les pratiques et les acteurs du quotidien, ce volume suscite une réflexion plus large sur les caractéristiques et la nature de la gouvernance montréalaise qui dépassera les formes institutionnelles théoriques, les crises ponctuelles ou les personnages les plus marquants. La succession d’études portant sur différentes périodes permet d’observer des autorités montréalaises soumises à la monarchie absolue et l’emprise coloniale, animées par le libéralisme économique ou par le progressisme, voire confrontées à l’action citoyenne. À travers cette démarche, le volume contribue à renouveler l’historiographie et à recadrer les débats concernant la gouvernance montréalaise.

Municipal Services and Employees in the Modern City considers the roles played by local institutions and particular processes that shaped the urban fabric. It rediscovers from models and maps the constituent dynamics of cities since the beginning of the nineteenth century, and demonstrates how patterns evolved in the way services and locations were organized; how urban transformation was underpinned by structural development, and how the municipal workforce became an integral part of the agencies of change. Municipal Services and Employees in the Modern City suggests that municipal experiences are central to the development of urban studies. Its focus of analysis ranges across Europe and the Americas from high-ranking bureaucrats to firefighters, engineers to accountants, and town clerks to public servants. Each essay provides detailed information on how change was formulated or resisted within the administrative apparatus, offering insight into a sector of the 'white-collar' class and the degree of commitment to public values often at times of social and political upheaval. They explore the course of relationships between local and central government, and the shifting bounds of municipal interventionism over a broad period; whilst incorporating a social history approach to interpret the day-to-day responsibilities and routine of administration.

This is a chapter from a draft manuscript of some 2000pp. in English being prepared for publication on relations between the USSR and various European powers, large and small, and the United States in the lead-up to World War II and then beyond until 1942. The author discovers and illustrates social and cultural aspects of diplomatic activities. The topic is Soviet relations with Nazi Germany and Poland in 1933. The larger context is the origins and unfolding of World War II, a subject of importance both intrinsically and politically in relations between the Russian Federation and the western powers. President Vladimir Putin has himself taken an interest in these questions, insisting on an honest, frank historical treatment of that period. How did the USSR and in particular the Narkomindel react to Adolf Hitler’s assumption of power in Germany at the end of January 1933? What additional information do the Russian archives contribute to our knowledge of the origins of the war? The methodology is that of a historical narrative based on archival research, especially in the AVPRF in Moscow. The objective is to explore the policies of the Narkomindel, and in particular the personal views of its leaders, M. M. Litvinov, N. N. Krestinskii, and B. S. Stomoniakov, on the interconnected issues of Soviet relations with Germany and Poland. Let’s call it an histoire des mentalités. 1933 was a year of transition in Soviet relations with the outside world moving from the so-called Rapallo policy of correct relations with Germany to a new policy of collective security and mutual assistance against Nazi Germany. In this chapter one can follow the evolution of ideas in the Narkomindel in reaction to Hitler’s rise to power: from immediate anxiety to a growing conviction that Rapallo was dead and that the USSR had to form stronger relationships in the west and with Poland. This may surprise some readers who think that the Soviet preference, or at least Stalin’s, was always a German orientation. As for Poland, in what may also surprise some readers, and especially many Poles, the Narkomindel sought better relations with Poland to counter the Nazi danger. It was the Polish government which did not want them, preferring a non-aggression pact with Nazi Germany (January 1934). Could Poles and Russians ever bury the hatchet after centuries of animosity? In a tragedy amongst many, they could not do so.

"Was the end of the First World War a catalyst for progress or the harbinger of future conflict? The essays in this collection address the impact of the end of the First World War, with a focus on the extent to which the end of the war and the Paris peace process encouraged or disrupted the nascent international order. The focus is on western Europe, particularly France. Among the topics addressed are the relationship between gender and peace activism, international and trans-Atlantic connections, and the significance of French domestic politics to international relations. Collectively, the essays extend the ongoing debate about the success of the Treaty of Versailles: they add nuance to the debate by showing how particular issues combined both success and failure. The volume should be of interest to military, diplomatic, and international historians, with particular chapters of interest to a wider range of scholars in European history.

Trophonios, bien connu pour son oracle terrifiant de Lébadée en Béotie, aurait été le maître aussi selon quelques auteurs byzantins, de cérémonies à caractère mystérique. Si ce versant initiatique n'est considéré souvent que comme une adjonction tardive destinée à revigorer un culte moribond, de très nombreux rapprochements peuvent cependant être effectués entre la tradition trophoniaque et les Nuées d'Aristophane, dont la grande scène d'initiation se révèle une parodie partielle et non exclusive des rites lébadéens, par ailleurs bien connus à Athènes à l'époque du poète. De nombreuses facettes du sanctuaire et du culte de Trophonios en ressortent éclairées à la lumière d'une ancienneté et d'une profondeur qu'on leur dénie trop souvent sous prétexte qu'on ne les connaît que par l'intermédiaire de témoins tardifs tels Plutarque et Pausanias. Trophonios, known for his terrifying oracle at Lebadeia, is also said by a few Byzantine writers to have been at the centre of mysteries; this initiatic aspect is usually imagined to be a late development, designed to reinvigorate a dying cult. However, numerous comparisons can be made between the Trophonian rites and Aristophanes' Clouds. The long scene of initiation in Clouds appears partly to parody these rites, well known in Athens at the time. This analysis sheds new light on many features of the shrine and the cult of Trophonios, too often neglected because they appear only in the work of late writers such as Plutarch and Pausanias..

As a collective act, human sacrifice in Greece has all the trappings of animal sacrifice. Being contrary to the norms of Greek society, it derives its inversive nature solely from the context in which it is performed. If we leave aside myths in which an entire community is threatened with extinction, ancient writers played upon the elements of perversity inherent in the act. Thus in tragedy, the community only has recourse to human sacrifice when it is not funtioning normally. Among foreign peoples, on the other hand, the community practises human sacrifice without due cause. Being the polar opposite of the Greek community, the norm is for its sacrificial victims to be human; it differs from the world of the Greek tragic city in that its abnormality is permanent rather than temporary, and is set out for all to see./En tant qu'acte collectif, le sacrifice humain grec présente les apparences de l'immolation animale: anti-valeur de la société hellénique, son caractère inversif lui vient donc seulement du contexte dans lequel il est perpétré. À côté des cas légendaires de danger d'éradication totale de la communauté, les auteurs anciens se sont plu toutefois à jouer sur les possibilités déviantes inhérentes à l'acte. Ainsi dans la tragédie, le collectivité qui recourt à des sacrifices humains est toujours bancale. Chez les étrangers, la communauté qui sacrifie le fait sans mobile; aux antipodes de la collectivité grecque, la victime de tous les jours y est humaine; la différence avec le monde tragique réside en ce que la déviance, permanente, y est exposée au grand jour.

La légende de Trophonios associe souvent le héros à son frère Agamède et à la construction, par une τέχνη proche de la magie, de chambres closes et secrètes, intermédiaires entre l'ici et l'au-delà. Elles s'ouvrent à certains privilégiés par un passage théoriquement interdit : voyage aux enfers, l'oracle de Trophonios, à Lébadée, répond donc à l'essence mythologique de son titulaire. Pour ce faire, il multiplie certains indices métaphysiques qui semblent désigner Timarque de Chéronée. Cette allusion offre la première attestation d'un mythe philosophique qu'on croyait n'être qu'une invention tardive de Plutarque et confirme l'importance de l'épisode de Timarque dans les traditions de l'oracle de Trophonios.
